Draw on a store without restraint and it will fail you early — finished or ruined ahead of schedule — leaving you embarrassed, when it was supposed to stretch over time. Work your cattle past measure and, once they are dead, you are left with regret and nothing to plough with.

Cultural Context

“Given as broad advice: go sparingly with whatever has to last a while.”

This is a variant of

Kunyanya kusevesa sadza / unozopedzisira wotemura

If you use up your relish too quickly, you will finish your meal eating plain sadza with nothing to go with it. Immoderate use of what you have leaves you with nothing at the end.
