English Translation

To get back at someone, draw in your head as a tortoise does. However grave the insult or injury done to you, hold your hand rather than answer it yourself, and let the case go before those whose business it is to decide it. The offender, for his part, should keep his nerve until the minds of both men have settled.

Cultural Context

“Quoted to cool the temper of a man about to deal with a wrong himself instead of through the courts, and as an acknowledgement that certain troubles admit of no remedy.”
